With this post i’m going to run through how to use words referencing tool and show how to add different referencing styles that don’t come pre-installed with Office. The reference tool will save you so much time when finishing up your project instead of scrambling through all of those notes and journals trying to put it together at the end.

For some people refworks or endnote may work but as there is no plugin for Word 2011 on the Mac I think the built in tool is the way to go. Plus its really easy to use and already there. Firstly, you’ll notice when you click on the dropdown that there isnt many options available but there are plenty of resources out there to add more. I’ll run through how to add reference styles in the video but the idea is to place the styles in your style folder usually found in
The Harvard reference tool/generator supports Adobe AIR, so this makes it a desktop application. This way you would not need to constantly go online to look for tool, it will sit with some of your. The files are .XSL files and they are the same files you use for Windows and Mac. You can download the styles style.zip file from http://bibword.codeplex.com/releases/view/15852
Using a reference tool will definitely save you time when it comes to finishing off your assignments. I use Harvard -Anglia as this is the closest style I’ve found that works. However, you wil need to change the ‘&’ symbol to an and in your bibliography. A quick way to do this is to use the replace tool in word.

If you are writting any kind of research work as an engineering student you may find that if you are using Microsoft Word (2007, 2011, 2013) default reference (citation) manager you may encounter that not all reference styles are present. For example a common reference style “The Harvard referencing style” is not included by default in Word.

Unzip the files from the IEEE.zip, you now see single file in the folder .
Please close Microsoft Word completely before continuing.

Copy the IEEE reference styles XLS file from the unzipped zip file to Style folder. You get that

First we need to download the reference styles from BibWordDownload the styles.zip from their website
Unzip the files from the styles.zip, you now see multiple files in the folder (these are the reference styles).
Please close Microsoft word completely before continuing.
In Finder: Applications → Microsoft office 2011 → Microsoft Word
Right click on Microsoft Word and click Show Package content
